A rich selection of Ayurvedic herbs is used to make these precious massage oils. The medicinal ingredients are carefully processed using traditional methods
One of the most enjoyable things you can do for your body and for your health is to have a full-body oil massage in the morning before your bath or shower. An oil massage has a soothing effect on the nervous system (Vata), strengthens the circulation, and helps to remove toxins from the body.
The Ayurvedic texts explain that the use of oil massage brings about a soft, flexible, strong and attractive body. It is extremely beneficial for the skin and should therefore be done regularly. Try it for yourself!
Ayurvedic oil massage Enjoy like a king - in your own home
The massage can be done either standing or sitting. Have a large towel underneath you to prevent oil stains getting on the floor, and make sure the temperature of the room is pleasantly warm. Ideally the oil should be heated beforehand to just above body temperature. For this, the glass or plastic bottle containing the oil should be placed in hot water for a short time.
The massage as a whole should be done with only a small amount of pressure. Massage slowly and evenly. Apply the oil either directly to the skin, or put it first on the palm of the hand and apply it from there. Hold the hand like a shell, with the thumb alongside. Massage with the whole hand – not just with the palm or fingertips. At the end, the whole body should be covered with a thin film of oil. If one day you do not have enough time, it is better do a shorter version of the massage rather than leave it out altogether. In this case just do the head, ears, and soles of the feet.
1. Start by massaging the head region. Massage the scalp with small circular movements. Give yourself sufficient time for this. Next do the ears and face. You should proceed especially gently when doing the ears. You can now apply the oil over the whole body, in order to allow maximum time for the oil to penetrate the skin.
2. Now massage the neck and shoulders. Remember to use the open palm and flat surfaces of the fingers rather than the fingertips.
3. Next, do the arms, hands and fingers. For the joints use a circular motion, and for the limbs and long bones use long up-and-down movements.
4. Chest and stomach area should be massaged very gently. Use a circular motion over the chest, straight up-and-down movements over the breast-bone and solar plexus. Massage the abdomen using slow, circular, clockwise movements (with the navel as the centre).
5. Massage the back to whatever extent you can. It is fine to use more pressure here.
6. The legs too can be massaged rather more vigorously. Do them in the same way as the arms: straight movements on the bones, circular movements on the joints.
7. Lastly massage the feet and the soles of the feet, which are considered to be especially important.
It is best if you can leave the oil on the skin for at least 15-20 minutes before you take a shower or bath. This gives time for the body to absorb the oil. If you have a cold or some digestive complaints then it is better to do without the oil massage for a while.
