Diabetes and Maharshi Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, diabetes mellitus is termed as Prameha. Prameha is a disease in which there is excess quantity of urine along with its increased frequency. The ancient Indian physicians described not only the sweetness of urine as one of the major symptoms but also the relationship of the disease with disturbance of the various sheaths(tissues) in the body.

The factors that contribute to the production of prameha would impair all three doshas, namely Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Among them, the first dosha to become impaired is kapha, followed by pitta, and as a result of these two doshas being impaired, the vata dosha becomes impaired. The high blood sugar produces the classical symptoms of polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyphagia (increased hunger).

It has been described as one among the eight major diseases which are difficult to cure (asthamahagada) in Ayurveda and refractory in nature. But the disease progression can be controlled.
